As I stared at the Papa Murphy’s logo on the instruction sheet, I had a case of déjá vu. Why did this logo look so familiar? This was my first time eating there and it wasn’t as if I had seen any of their commercials (I don’t have cable) I didn’t remember any of their advertisements. Nothing.
Then I realized that it wasn’t the logo itself that was striking a remembrance chord, it was the color.
It was red.
This realization made me start thinking about all the other pizza chains and even private pizza places that use the color red. Here are some of them: Pizza Hut, Cici’s, Dominos, Papa Johns, Michael’s Pizza, Ragazza (both in Clarksville, TN) All use red in their logo. Why? Was it pizza’s Italian history that spurred it? Maybe the red sauce? Are our brains trained to look for that red sign to shout PIZZA!? I’m not sure. Could it be that red has been proven to associate red with hunger?
My next thought became…well who doesn’t use red for their pizza place logo? The only one I could think of was Little Caesars (predominantly orange) What other major chains or local Clarksville pizza places don’t use red in their logo? Even further…what other restaurants besides pizza places use red?
Are our brains triggered to think “food!” when we see red?
